Enable FTP Server function on your Huawei Modem/Router with USB device. FTP server without PC

Hello everyone,

Today, I want to ask you: what if you have a personal network-attached drive at home or in your office?

My name is David, and you’re reading IT solutions. In this article, we’ll talk about how to convert any Wi-Fi router with a USB port into a storage device. This means you can connect a pen drive or hard drive to it, and access and control all the files from any device connected to your network.

Let’s dive into the setup!

Step 1: Preparing Your Router

So, I’m using a Nokia router that supports USB functionality and is connected via Airtel Fiber. Here’s the USB port we’ll use.

  1. Check the USB Port: Plug in your pen drive or hard drive into the USB port. If there’s a light that starts blinking, the port is working.

Step 2: Configuring Router Settings

  1. Access the Router Configuration:

    • Connect to the router’s Wi-Fi (e.g., SSID: office55).
    • Open a web browser and enter the router’s IP address. Most routers use 192.168.1.1, but it can vary. If 192.168.1.1 doesn’t work, find your router’s IP address by opening Command Prompt and typing ipconfig. Look for the "Default Gateway" address.
  2. Login: Enter the router’s IP address in the browser to access the configuration page. The default username and password are usually "admin" for most routers. If you don’t remember them, check with your internet service provider or search online for the default credentials of your router model.

  3. Find USB Settings:

    • Once logged in, navigate to the USB or storage settings section. Enable the FTP server if it’s not already enabled.

Step 3: Accessing the USB Drive

  1. Check USB Connection:

    • After enabling FTP, you should see the connected USB device listed, including its storage capacity and available space.
  2. Create Access Credentials:

    • Create a username and password for accessing the USB drive via FTP.
  3. Test Access:

    • Open any web browser and type ftp://[Router IP] (e.g., ftp://192.168.1.1). Enter the username and password when prompted. You should see your USB drive and its contents.

Step 4: Using an FTP Client

  1. Install FTP Client:

    • For a more user-friendly interface, use an FTP client. I recommend FileZilla for Windows. Download it from the official website to avoid viruses.
  2. Set Up FileZilla:

    • Open FileZilla and select "Site Manager" to create a new site.
    • Enter the router’s IP address and your FTP login credentials. Connect to view and manage the files on your USB drive.
  3. Using FileZilla:

    • The interface shows USB contents on the right and your computer’s files on the left. You can drag and drop files to upload or download them.

Step 5: Accessing from a Mobile Device

  1. Install File Manager Plus:

    • For mobile access, download the "File Manager Plus" app.
  2. Connect via FTP:

    • Open the app, go to "Remote" and add a new FTP connection. Enter the router’s IP address, username, and password.
  3. Manage Files:

    • You can view, upload, or download files directly from your mobile device.

Step 6: Remote Access (Optional)

  1. Access from Anywhere:
    • If you want to access your files remotely (e.g., from another city), let me know in the comments. I can make a dedicated video on setting up remote access.

! I hope you found this guide helpful.

Stay safe, stay sarcastic, and see you next time!
